SAFE HAVEN COMPUTER AND HOMEWORK CENTER

 

The Safe Haven Computer and Homework Center is located at 141 Tenney Street in Methuen, and is open Monday to Friday from 2:00pm to 7:00pm during the school year. Computer instructors and mentors are available to assist the youth with their projects and homework. This program is funded through the FY 2010 Shannon Grant and the ECCF Merrimack Valley General Fund.

 

FOOD BASKET/GIVING PROGRAM

 

The Methuen Arlington Neighborhood, Inc. inconjunction with the Methuen Exchange Club, L/MCC, Merrimack Golf Course, and Salem/Methuen Rotary Club deliver an average of 120 meals to working families during the holiday season. Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets provide holiday cheer.

 
KARATE PROGRAM

M.A.N. Inc. offers a Karate program to 35 neighborhood youth. The classes are held on Tuesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The instructor is Shihan Larry Giordano from the Methuen Karate School. The classes are held between September and June. This program is funded by Cynthia Mohr and the Department of Housing and Community Development and the City of Methuen CDBG Grant.

SATELLITE LIBRARY

M.A.N. Inc. offers a Satellite Library with reading books. The Satellite Library is open weekdays from 2:00pm to 7:00pm and saturdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm. All residents are welcome to use the library. There are research books, encyclopedias, and other tools for youth and adults alike to use for projects or research papers. This is funded by the Department of Housing and Community Development and the City of Methuen CDBG Grant.

POLICE BASKETBALL LEAGUE

For over ten years, M.A.N. Inc. has partnered with the Methuen Police Department to run a basketball league for the youth of the neighborhood. Over 120 boys and girls ages 7-12 participate each year. The league meets on Thursday evenings for the months of July and August. A Block Party/Job Fair/Tournament is held on the first Saturday after Labor Day each year. Every child receives a medal or trophy. The league is sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Greater Lawrence.

SATURDAY ACTIVITIES

Each Saturday from October to March, M.A.N. Inc. offers arts and crafts and a current movie. The children utilize the Satellite Library and enjoy pizza and juice. The pizza is donated every saturday by PJ's Pizza.

SUMMER PARKS PROGRAM

During the summer months of July and August, M.A.N. Inc.'s staff and part-time employees of the City of Methuen's Recreation Department are at the Tenney Street Park. Breakfast, drinks and lunch are served free to all participants. Arts and crafts, sports, games, and books are made available to all who attend. This is a structured, supervised program to provide a safe summer alternative. This program is funded by the Essex County Community Foundation's Summer in Greater Lawrence Grant for 2010.

 

JUNIOR & TEEN ACHIEVERS PROGRAM

The Junior and Teen Achievers is a youth development program for teens, age 11 to 18, which focuses on career development, academic achievement, leadership development, and social development. The program strives to help youth improve academic skills, to achieve higher levels of school performance, to improve overall self-esteem and, ultimately, and to prepare for college and future careers. This program focuses on tutoring, promoting college awareness among parents and children, guest speakers, SAT preparation workshops, computer training, assistance with college research, and college tours. This program is funded jointly with the Lawrence YMCA by the Amelia Peabody Foundation.
